Have you ever taken the SAT test? SAT- Scholastic Aptitude Test- is an important test to get acceptance from universities. It contains three sections, which are math, critical reading, and writing. A perfect score in each section is 800, so the total will be 2,400 points. Preparing for this test is a little bit different, so it requires a special preparation method.

The math section is an important component in this test. Getting ready for this part of the test is a huge concern, especially for international students. Because international students were taught math in their country in their own language, they find it difficult to understand some math problems that they were familiar with in their home country. Thus, if an international student wants to prepare for the test, he or she must learn the mathematical terms first. Another troubling issue is the limited time. Many students complain that there is no time to work on all the math problems during the test, and that is what drives their score down. To solve this problem, students have to adjust to work in a limited time by taking practice tests. These practice tests, which are found on web sites and SAT books, are very helpful in order to simulate the test conditions for the students. By getting used to working in similar situations or conditions, students have the potential to obtain high scores.

Critical reading is the hardest section for all students in general and international students in particular. In reading sections, all articles are chosen from science researches and academic books, which seem boring for students. Moreover, these articles are written with a very high-level language and sophisticated vocabulary. In order to get high grades in reading, a student should focus on learning strategies more than learning words. For example, a student can infer some of the words’ meaning and the main points by understanding the context. In fact, understanding the context is one the most effective strategies in students’ opinion.

The writing section is the easiest part in that test. For this test, a student is required to fill in two pages. This may sound frightening in the beginning, but it is much easier than what one might think. Graders spend 90 seconds on grading each paper, so they cannot read every single sentence in the essay. Consequently, the quality of the information that is given in the essay is not important. In fact, graders focus on the structure and the size of the essay, so it is absolutely essential to write more words in the normal structure, which is an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion.

To sum up, SAT has distinct ways of preparation. Special strategies do not mean that this test is extremely difficult, but they exhibit how different this test is. Have you ever talked with a friend who wants to study at ELI at Texas A&M University? ELI is one of the most popular English institutes in the US. ELI has appropriate books for international students, excellent teachers, and modern educational tools such as learning management systems and smart boards. In addition, ELI is professional in the activities aspect; it has many creative programs that help students to learn and enjoy at the same time. One of these is Texas Families Program. Every student has a Texas family he or she can meet and socialize with anytime to practice English, and also, to learn about American culture; personally, this is my favorite activity. Thus, I have no doubt that any international student eagerly seeks to study at ELI. Although arriving in a foreign place is not easy, there are many steps that will help to assist your friend attain a dream, which is studying at ELI.

At the beginning, the first and the most significant step is to go to Mrs. Ricks- International Student Advisor II, DSO- at Bell 202A, to receive the information needed for registration. After that, let your friend contact Mrs. Ricks and ask about the required papers such as I-20, and the tuition. Finally, make your friend apply for an F1 visa to study in the US. As soon as your friend gets the visa, he or she should start looking for a ticket to Texas. After that, I suggest to him or her to do some search on the internet or read books about American culture to avoid any kind of culture shock at the beginning. The final step is getting the ticket to Texas and preparing for travelling.

Once your friend arrives in Texas, there is another set of steps that needs to be taken. At the top of the list is housing. Your friend has to take a long tour through the dorms such as The Tradition and Factory and then find the best dorm or apartment that fits his or her situation. Secondly, your friend has to open an account in one of the local banks such as Wells Fargo or Citibank with help from you. Thirdly, your friend has to have an American phone number; he or she has many options such as AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint. I personally recommend AT&T. These are the basic steps to take when people come to another country.

When ELI starts, your friend should attend the orientation day for several reasons, including meeting new friends and new teachers and knowing ELI’s rules. Next, your friend should take a tour around the huge campus to adjust to the new environment. Also, I recommend making international friends to practice and learn about new cultures.

In conclusion, I listed many steps that will absolutely help any student who wants to study in such a wonderful institute like the ELI. I predict that if international students read this blog and follow the steps, they will be excellent ELI students.

ACT Test

Do you know how to get a high score on the ACT test? This exam is an abbreviation of American College Testing, and a criterion for university admissions. Any high school student who wants to be accepted to a university should take this test. It includes three sections, which are math, English, and science. Achieving a high score on this test requires hard working.

In the math section, students must do 20 questions in just 20 minutes, so they have one minute for each question. This section has hard math problems. To prepare for it, every student should practice various math problems. Working on these problems makes students’ brain ready to solve many math problems in a small period of time. Research shows that the human mind is like a muscle, so doing math problems every day will make students’ brain smarter. As a result, repeated practice before the test is a significant factor to increase the score.

The English section has three different types of questions, which are reading, grammar, and writing. First, the most difficult one which is reading. Reading includes passages and questions about them. Students should answer the question in just one minute, which is a short time. Therefore, students must read every day to prepare for the reading question. In addition, reading every day increases students’ speed of reading, which will help students to answer all questions correctly. Secondly, grammar questions are easier than reading. To achieve a high score in grammar, students should memorize grammar rules. Finally, writing has just one question, which is a prompt, asking the student to write an essay in 25 minutes. To do that, students must practice how to write an essay quickly. Also, providing the essay with many examples and research will increase the score. As a result, practice is the secret of achieving a high score in the English section.

The last section is science. This section has many charts, so it is important to learn how to read charts and graphs before the test. In addition, it includes chemistry and physics problems. To prepare for this section, students should read about charts, chemistry, and physics. Also, practicing how to solve these problems is significant. The most important factor to obtain a high score on this section is to be confident while answering the questions. Moreover, students must manage their time by dividing the number of questions with the number of minutes so they will not leave questions without answers.

To sum up, life is hard; people who want to achieve their goals and have a great living must work hard. Nothing is easy. However, by being optimistic and struggling, people will realize their dreams. Do not give up, set a dream for your future, and start to work on it now. Passing the ACT with a high score may be the first step for a wonderful future.

Reading has been considered as investment. Test of English as a Foreign Language was developed to evaluate the non-native English speakers’ language. TOEFL has become a requirement for all the American universities; this test contains four sections: reading, listening, speaking, and writing. The reading comprehension is the hardest section for most test takers. In order do better in this section, there are some strategies that can assist the test taker. These strategies are time management and attacking the passage.

“Time is money” should be the test takers’ motto. Using the limited time wisely is the most important TOEFL reading mastery tip. Timing is a skill that makes finishing on time possible. If you have a problem with the given time, time management is the solution that will dispose this problem and enable you to get high grades in the TOEFL reading. Approximately, one minute and 20 seconds is the appropriate time for each question, and your job is to select according to the timeline that is provided for you. Furthermore, try to choose an answer within the time limit even if you are not comfortable with the answer.

Attack; do not be afraid. Attacking the passages is one of the best strategies. To begin with, you should not read the whole passage before answering the questions because that will waste your time. Instead, acquire the basic concepts of the passage and prepare your mind for what you will be reading by reading the title of the passages and skimming the passages by reading the first sentence of each paragraph. Skimming the passage will grant you an introduction to the passage before you answer the questions and seek the details.

Test of English as Foreign Language has become globally important. While students are thinking about universities, they usually vacillate between different choices. Also, each university has its own requirements. Studying in an appropriate university helps students become successful.

Depending on their abilities, undergraduate students should choose the appropriate universities. This tip helps students to be admitted to a suitable university and study successfully. To illustrate, if a student gets 1600 points on SAT and submits his or her application to a university that requires 1800 points on the SAT, this student will probably not get the admittance. What is more, this scholar will lose money that is given to the university to fill the application. If a student with a low score does get the acceptance, this student may not succeed because of the high standard of the university.

After considering the level of difficulty, an undergraduate student should think about a suitable city. Cities vary in prices, weather, and size. Every student has his or her own standards for selecting a city. Choosing a well-suited city gives the students advantage to feel relaxed. Comfortable environment allows students to get higher scores. Otherwise, life for such students would be miserable. In fact, I had a friend who joined a university which was located in an area where the weather was cold and the city was small and expensive. Actually, he did not recognize that he was taking a risk by choosing a city which had inappropriate characteristics. That risk led him to abandon his studies and get out of the city before the end of the semester. As a result, he lost a semester without receiving any benefit. His experience helped me to avoid selecting a university that is located in an unsuitable region.

Universities that match students’ needs help them reach their goals. For this reason, students should search reliable sources to obtain the precise information about each university they are interested in. In addition, parents have a significant role in students’ choice. They have the experience in life, which allows them to guide their children to success.

How to Eat Healthy

As students, we have a busy life with classes, assignments, and studying, and sometimes we do not have time for healthy eating. Without food, nothing works in our body, especially our brain; therefore, you need to make sure that you have all meals: breakfast, lunch, and dinner. There are two different ways that you can eat healthy. First, you can select your own food in a supermarket or purchase it in a restaurant.

To choose a healthy food, you need to know what a balanced diet is. A balanced diet consists of carbohydrates (bread, rice, pasta, and cereals), protein (chicken, fish, meat, and milk products), fresh vegetables, and fruit. The best energy source is carbohydrate, present in large amounts in pasta and bread; it is the main fuel for the brain, for it maintains the physical and mental strength of the body. You can find some good supermarkets in College Station that will provide you a healthy balanced diet such as HEB and Walmart. I usually buy at Walmart because I think it is cheaper. As an international student, sometimes it is difficult to find the ingredients that you are accustomed to, but there you can find several kinds of food. At Texas A&M University you do not have to worry about transportation. You can get easily to the supermarkets. You just have to know the nearest bus route to your house.

If you do not like to cook, or if it is not allowed to cook in your dormitory, you can go to a restaurant in this town. Here you will find a lot of places to dine; you just have to know how to select. I recommend you to go to Chipotle Mexican Grill if you like Mexican food; Denny´s is also a good place to go, for they serve great salads. In Pita Pit, you can find Arabic food. In Grub Burger Bar, you find tasteful and low fat burgers.

I know that not everyone has the possibility to cook, but if you do, try to prepare your own meal instead of eating outside. You can prepare a healthy meal and take it with you; that way you can save money and eat something that you like.

How to Keep Safe

Do you know how to be safe in College Station? Safety and security are important issues for all new students. New coming students do not know enough information about rules, regulations, and police departments, which are available to keep their safety and security. Also, they have many questions to ask about the procedures that they should follow to keep themselves away from making mistakes or violate the law. For your safety, it is required from you to be cooperative with the police and call the police department immediately in case of observing any suspicious persons or actions.

The first step to keep safe is to take your cell phone and your ID with you wherever you go. Besides its importance to introduce yourself to others, some important phone numbers are written on the back of your ID. These numbers are for help and emergency. In case of accident injuries, crime in progress, or fire, you can call 9-911 if you are on campus, and 911 if you are off campus. In case of non-emergency, it is better for you to call the university police at 845-2345. There are also some other phone numbers on the back of your ID card, such as corps escorts, student health services, student counseling helpline, car-pool, and help desk central. If you find yourself in any sort of trouble, you can use one of the above mentioned numbers according to your situation. Furthermore, there is the code maroon emergency notification system that has many ways to reach campus members in an emergency, and usually uses text messages, Emails, television, and many other techniques to alert people about risks.

The second step is to follow the rules in all your actions and attitudes, and avoid being against the law. For example, if you want to drive a car, it is permitted for you to use your international driver’s license only for one year, but then you have to get American driver’s license. On the other hand, if you are using your bicycle to move around the university, you need to use the bicycles’ parking which is scattered all over the campus and near each building. That also requires you to provide your bicycle with one or two lockers to keep it away from being easily stolen by someone. It is also recommended for you in this case to get a registration number for your bicycle from the police department on campus. The sticker of the number on your bicycle helps to keep your bicycle away from being stolen by robbers because they know well that they will be easily caught by the police men. Moreover, you should protect your home, car, and personal things, as well as being aware of your surroundings. Do not be alone in some empty and remote places. Try to join the nearest group of people if you feel that someone is following you and trust your instincts. Lock your doors, check your personal property, stay alert, and pay close attention.

In conclusion, safety and security can be achieved by the cooperation between people and police in order to live in a peaceful and secured environment. I wish you a comfortable stay and good luck.

One of the obstacles that sponsored students face is activating their insurance card. The following are the steps you need to take to get an Aetna’s insurance card.

Getting an insurance card might not be the first step you take; however, it is one of the most fundamental tasks. One of the reasons you need an insurance card is because in case of an emergency, which requires going to the hospital; anyhow, the insurance card will cover the expensive coasts.

The first step you take is to get in contact with the insurance company, which in this case is Aetna, and provide them with your national ID number; to get in contact with Aetna dial 1-866-236-1038. After contacting them, they will provide you with an insurance card number. Following that step, you go to Aetna’s website www.Aetnainternational.com and sign up with the insurance number. Then fill in your information. After completing all the required steps, wait for 6-10 business days for the card to come in. In the mean time, you may use the insurance number, or you can print a temporary card that occurs in the website.

This might take some time; on the other hand, it will assure your health costs and make sure that you have a safe education trip.

How to Get the Social Security Number

I have heard from many international students that we as an international students do not have the right to get a Social Security Number (SSN). However, after I asked the advisor at the International Student Services (ISS) at Texas A&M University, I learned that we can obtain the SSN whether we are as a J-1student or F-1 student. The advisor at ISS defined the SSN to me as an alpha-numerical code assigned by governments of several countries to citizens and temporary workers. In the United States, the SSN is a nine-digit number issued to U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and temporary (working) residents under section 205(c) (2) of the Social Security Act. Getting a SSN for international students has many benefits. Therefore, it is important to know the basic steps to get this important document.

The first step that you have to take is to get a verification from the ISS (Request for a Social Security Number). You can request this verification by two ways. First, send an email to the ISS employer office. Remember to explain the purpose of getting your SSN in your email, that is, why you want to get this document. For example, you can state your wish to work (you cannot get a job without a SSN) or to get some benefits that the government offers for its residents. If your purpose is to work, remember the following: If you are a J-1 student, you are not allowed to work in the U.S.; as a result, getting a SSN in this case is useful for other issues such as obtaining a credit card. Yet, if you are a J-2, F-1, or M-1 student you have the right to work in the U.S. The best format of this email, as the advisor told me, is starting with greeting such as “Dear Sir/ Madam,” and then requesting the following: “I am an international student (J-1 student), and I would like to obtain a Social Security Number (SSN). I do not have a job, and I do not intend to get one in the future.” While if you are an F1- or M-1 student, change the purpose of getting a SSN. After that, you will receive an email which will tell you to go to the front desk in the ISS to pick up your verification. This process takes five to ten business days. The second way to get this verification is by visiting the front desk of the ISS directly.

The second step to get the SSN is applying for a SSN. If you get the request for a Social Security Number from the ISS, now apply for a SSN. First, you have to fill out the form S-55, which is the application for (A) SSN, and you can find it on following website http://www.socialsecurity.gov/ssnumber/ss5.htm. Then print it and keep it in your records since you have to present it during the interview which is the following step. The interview in the Social Security office is the second step. This office located in Bryan: 2120 W. BRIARGATE DR. BRYAN, TX, 77802. When you go to the local Social Security Office for an interview, bring all your original documents; in our case, you need to take your passport, I-94, verification from ISS, I-20 or DS-2019, and of course the application form S-55. All these documents are necessary to prove your immigration status. When you apply for a SSN, remember to know what the documents that you need are. Also, documents that you present must be original. That is, photocopies are not acceptable.

The final step, which is the easiest one, is waiting for your SSN. During the interview, the employee will tell you that if there is no issue related to your request, your SSN card will be sent within two weeks, and if there is any problem, the office will let you know.

To sum up, although you do not need a SSN to get benefits and services from the government such as getting a driver’s license, registering for school, or obtaining private health insurance, it is still the first question that some organizations and companies ask you about to identify you. As an international student, we have to know that we will graduate from our universities some day, and we might want to enter the U.S again for different purposes. Therefore, if we inform the employee in the embassy that we have a SSN record, it will help us with own future request to reenter the U.S. Again remember that the first step to get the SSN is by getting the verification from the ISS, then fill out the form S-55 online, and take all your original documents to the local Social Security Office.

How to Avoid Homesickness When Studying Abroad

Are you a new international student? Do you worry about feeling homesick? Homesickness is a psychological condition that is correlated with studying abroad. Leaving the home country is really hard. However, everyone can overcome it. The student can avoid homesickness by organizing his or her life accurately, making new friends, and contacting with his or her family often.

To start, the learner should organize his or her life perfectly. He or she has to manage his or her time, keep his or her place clean and organized always, and have extracurricular activities. To begin with managing his or her time, time-management is significant to make the student well organized. Everything should have its own time. For instance, the student should arrange his or her time for studying, playing, going out, and eating. Moving to keeping his or her place always clean, a dirty place might impact the person’s concentration and it might also cause depression. In many cases, if the place is not clean, it will have a bad smell. Some people do not know that the smell of the studying place has a great effect on the learner’s concentration. Moreover, a clean place with a great smell helps the student to feel relaxed and ready to study. Last but not least, each person should have extracurricular activities that he or she enjoys. Life should always be balanced between the person studies and any other activities. For example, the student’s life should not be education and studying only, nor should it be sports and fun always. Therefore, his or her life has to be well balanced between studying and having fun. To sum up, the first most important aid to avoid homesickness is organizing the student’s lifestyle.

Moving to the second most important support in helping a student to avoid homesickness, making new friends is definitely substantial when someone is studying abroad. According to Zainab Almohammad, “ Good friends in a foreign country are a second family.” Being alone in a country where the person does not know anyone is kind of boring and makes the person feel lonely. Hence, the foreign student needs to have new friends who help him or her to adapt to the new lifestyle and culture, take him or her from his loneliness by having fun activities in their free time, and assist him or her to solve his or her problems with his or her assignments. Some people might find making new friends is hard. However, it is the easiest thing that the person can ever do when he or she is studying abroad. Consequently, the student should be brave and never ever shy. For example, the student should feel comfortable talking to other people and sharing with them his or her life experiences and new activities. All that he or she needs to do is talk with a student that he or she feels comfortable with. After that, he or she introduces him or herself to this person and they start exchanging numbers. When they share numbers, he or she should text the guy or the girl and ask him or her what are they up to that upcoming weekend. Eventually, he or she starts to invite the person to hang out with him or her in the weekend and learn more about each other. If the student keeps doing the same every time he or she meets a new friend, he or she will end up having many friends who will become close to him or her and will also be his or her second family and ally. In other words, making new friends is extremely important to escape homesickness.

Ultimately, the learner should keep in contact with his or her family because it is vital to evade homesickness. With modern technology, there are many ways that the student can communicate with his or her family. For instance, skype , viber, whatsapp, and tango are applications that a person can install in his or her smart phone and talk to his or her family for free. To illustrate, the person can see his or her family and talk to them at the same time by using skype or tango. However, he or she can either talk or text by viber. Even though it will not be the same as when his or her family is by his or her side, at least he or she can talk to them frequently whenever he or she wants for free. Some people might say that there are exceptions for those people who do not miss their family because they have a strong personality or heart. To correct them, missing his or her family is not a sign of weakness. As a normal human with all the natural passion, a person cannot be happy without being surrounded by his or her family and friends. Therefore, the expatriate person should schedule a time that he or she has to talk with his or her family. In short, feeling the family support and listening to their emotional words everyday plays a significant role in the student psychology.

To finalize, feeling homesick when studying abroad is not a fact that happens to everyone. As was mentioned previously, there are many ways to avoid homesickness. The student is the only one who can control him or herself and decide in which way he or she wants to live. The student can either make him or herself feel comfortable or depressed. To repeat, the new international student should avoid being homesick by arranging his or her life, making new friends, and communicating with his or her family. If the student does everything to prevent homesickness, he or she will never feel homesick. Furthermore, when the student avoids feeling homesick, he or she will always succeed in their new life and studies. Are you able to avoid homesickness? Yes you are!

How to Use a Study Room

Which do you prefer, studying at home or at a library? Some may prefer to study at home rather than study at a library, but I would recommend that you use a study room at a library because Texas A&M University is equipped with the ultimate study rooms on campus. Studying at the study rooms can help you study effectively.

Using a study room is simple and straightforward, and all you need to reserve an individual room is to bring your student ID card. First, go to the AskUs desk on the first floor of Evans Library, and ask about the availability of individual rooms. If the individual rooms are available, you can receive a key for your room from a staff member. After obtaining the key, you can study in the individual study room without any interruption like nearby noises. In this room, food and beverages are permitted as long as you follow the policy. Then you can take a coffee break when you get tired, and you can restart your study again.

If you want to use a study room with your friends for a group project, group rooms are adequate for these students. Unlike an individual room, a brilliant benefit of a group room is that we can reserve a room in advance. Before you go to the library, open the University libraries’ web site to reserve a study room. At the top of the home page, you can find a tab of “services” at the upper right corner of the screen, and click a link named “study rooms” after pointing to the tab of services. Subsequently, click the most convenient location for you, and select available slots. There are variously-sized rooms for 4 through 12, so you can choose a room depending on your use. After submitting your request, just go to the reserved group room on time. You do not need to get a key because these rooms are unlocked.

For both types of rooms, there is a next student who wants to use the room, so you should accurately cut your work on time and should clean up the room for the next person. After finishing your study on time, you can go straight home if you use a group room, but you must return a key to the AskUs desk in the case of using in an individual room. Students tend to ignore the routine rules, but they have to observe the basic rules for keeping the studying space comfortable for everyone.

These study rooms are very beneficial for students to concentrate all their energies into their work, and there are a variety of different size rooms on demand. Using the study rooms also enables students to relax with some food and drink in the private rooms. How to Obtain a Texas Driver’s License

Are you planning to purchase a car while you are in Aggieland? Do you have a family and you need to move from place to another? Since College Station is a small town and it does not have public transportation such as a public bus that will take you wherever you need, you have to buy a car to facilitate your movement while you are in College Station. The first thing that you should do is to obtain a Texas driver’s license to be able to drive a car legally.

First of all, since you are an international student, you have to gather your identification documents such as your passport, I-20, I-94, and your visa. To apply for a Texas driver’s license, you must visit Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) in person or check out the DPS website at www.dps.texas.gov to know the exact documents that you have to collect. Plus, you have to spend one month in the United States because you need a permanent address before applying for a Texas driver’s license. Also, you must be ready to provide your full name, date of birth (DOB), place of birth, residential address, and mailing address. Moreover, you have to describe yourself physically. Be sure you know your weight and height in U.S. units (pounds and feet). If you do not know how to calculate them, the staff of the DPS will help you. Additionally, you must bring evidence of financial responsibility (insurance), vehicle registration of your car, and fees.

The second step to obtain your Texas driver license is passing the knowledge test which is about road signs. You must be able to understand road signs written in English. Note that, if you are above 25 years of age, you will take the knowledge test in the DPS. The staff of the DPS will schedule you an appointment to take the test. On the other hand, if you are under 25 years of age, you have to complete and pass a driver education course. A driver education course is an online course that will teach you about all signs and road rules. You must successfully complete six hours and pass the course to be able to take the road test. The DPS has more information about the driver education course and how to apply for it.
